- El gobierno estadounidense impuso limites a la cantidad de peces
que pueden atrapar pescadores comerciales y recreativos en las aguas
que controla en el Caribe, al señalar que las restricciones anteriores no
han protegido a poblaciones cada vez más pequeñas de decenas de especies.

Los nuevos límites cubren las aguas de Puerto Rico y de las Islas Vírgenes de Estados Unidos,
y entran en efecto el lunes, lo que ha disgustado a pescadores, quienes dicen que las restricciones
sobre especies, que incluyen una muy preciada langosta y un caracol marino, pondrán en riesgo su sustento.

The Customer Banker said the check looked fake, so she took it, along with Njoku’s driver license and credit card, and called Bank Support.

After waiting for about 15 minutes, Njoku said he got impatient and told Chase he was leaving to do an important errand. By the time he got back, the bank was closed. Njoku said he called customer service and asked them what he should do. He says they told him to go back to the bank the next day to get his money.

But when Njoku arrived, it wasn’t the money that was waiting for him.

“They just threw me in jail; they called the police and said this guy has a fraudulent check,” Njoku said.

His name was Jesus and he died the same year that I was born.

Since he spent most of his life in the mountains, and record keeping was an afterthought in those days well, we've got to rely on family lore and we know how families tend to add, subtract and stretch. Anyway I know next to nothing about his childhood or parents, or birthday. What is said is that he was of Taino blood. This may or not be correct; he certainly exhibited the physical characteristics. At any event he was culturally mixed. As are many Puerto Ricans. We have an adaptability component that assimilates other cultures as if water for a sponge. I think its how we survive.

Anyway, when Spaniards came to Puerto Rico they basically set up camp along the shores. Then there were the landowners that tried to set up in the mountains. These were largely inaccessible so, they seemed remote. Once in the mountains they intermarried with the Indian clans and this mix gave rise to what we now call Jibaros. My grandfather was a Jibaro. He was poor. He worked as a cane cutter, using a machete to cut cane made him a Machetero. The cane fields are on the coast so he had to walk every day from mountain to sea just to work. My mother recalls that he'd leave before sunup and return after dark. That he had a dozen kids seems impossible but there it is.

He fed his family through the great depression mostly on tubers, though they had an occasional chicken.

He married a woman, named Juana - nicknamed Texla, an Arawak name, of mostly Spanish blood.
Blue-eyed and such.
She was a domineering woman who walked with limp,
and her life's ambition was to marry off her kids to someone in town.

She kind'a got her wish;
when their children grew up they migrated to New York City . .
and took Jesus and Juana with them. to be continued, someday . . .
